Brother Richard Hartz, SM
1942-2025

It has pleased God to call to himself our dear brother Richard Harold Hartz, SM. Brother Richard, a well-known, even “legendary” member of the Chaminade Marianist Community and High School Staff, who passed away peacefully on Saturday morning, March 15th. He was 83 years old and had been a professed Marianist religious for 64 years.

Brother Richard was involved in countless initiatives over his long tenure at Chaminade. He is known and remembered for a wide variety of work, including as an incredible teacher of German, the editor of the Chaminade News, an avid photographer, Alumni Moderator, Director of Development, and much more! As a result, he became known, and loved, by thousands of members of the Chaminade Family, over several generations.

To his brothers, the members of the Marianist Province of Meribah, Richard was known as a faithful son of the Blessed Virgin Mary who devoted his life to Her mission, both in the community and in the mission of Catholic Education. His humorous banter, both within the community and in the school, endeared him to all. His faithfulness to his religious vocation also served as an enduring inspiration. We commend him, now, to the welcoming arms of the Lord, and remember him in our prayers with deep gratitude for his life and service.

May he rest in God’s peace!
